Financial Independence Journey – Why Budget in NYC | The Real Truth

Young Married Couple starting journey to financial independence in New York City – one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Why Move To New York City?

My husband’s job contract stipulated that we move to NYC by the end of 2021. As a result, we moved (back) to New York City in August of 2021. As far as I know, being 29 years old, married, and on a budget makes me an outlier. Especially in NYC. Shockingly, many of my peers cannot articulate what their financial goals are. Even in NYC, the home of Wall Street, personal finance is a taboo topic. This blog is here to change that.

Choosing relationships over financial savings

First, let me address the real truth and the elephant in the room. My choice to live in NYC goes against the advice of every finance blogs out there. For example, I am spending a lot more than my suburban friends on rent. However, my justification here is that my closest friends live in NYC. Therefore, the price to live here is worth it if it means I am building closer life-long relationships. In conclusion, I have made the choice to invest in my relationships through one way which is to live in the same city as my closest friends. Essentially, the way I think of it is that as I leave my twenties and enter my thirties with no debt, no children, and no real vices, living here makes it easier for me to continue to build invaluable relationships.

Starting in the Middle

Later, I will go into my murky financial past. Leaving that behind, where you meet me now is that I am married, and we make a combined six-figures and in a high household income bracket. Importantly, this comes after taking a break from a career (me) and investing in an education (him), plus taking bets on career changes (both of us).

The Goal and the Journey

In this blog, I will be sharing our combined financial journey as we embark on living in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Our goal for daily budgeting is to ensure we are on track to building wealth for our future family and generations to come. In conclusion, we aren’t perfect and will make mistakes along the way. Despite it all, I hope this blog is one point of inspiration for what to or not to do.

Question For You

If you live in NYC, what is your reason for living here? What is your biggest money challenge? If you’re outside of the city, what part of our financial journey interests you the most?
